BroeselmaschineThe Duisburg band Bröselmaschine was founded in 1968 by the Duisburg musician and music teacher Peter Bursch and the Duisburg artist Willi Kissmer. The band members not only played together, they also lived together in a community, following the example of the legendary Kommune 1 in Berlin. All over the world, especially in USA and Japan, the debut album from 1971 is listed as one of the most important Krautrock-albums of all time – beneath Amon Düül, Can and Tangerine Dream.
On the occasion of their 50th anniversary MIG release an Anthology-boxset contain 5 CD. The box-set contains all studio albums including the iconic debut, carefully restored and digitally remastered. “Baked” and digitalized sound engineer Hoppi made a contemporary mix,…

…but for all that still ensouled by the ghosts of the 70ties. The album „Graublau“ (Greyblue) was digitally remastered from the original analogue 1/4 inch Mastertape from 1984.

It is fascinating and entertaining to follow this extraordinary band through the decades in different line-ups. On guitar: Willi Kissmer and Michael Dommers (previously “Wallenstein”) and, of cause mastermind Peter Bursch, who is also playing the sitar. Part of the band since years: German exceptional drummer Manni von Bohr, on keyboards: Helge Schneider, Klaus Dapper on flutes and saxophone, Detlef Wiederhöft on bass, the great Nippy Noya on percussions and many more… — MiG

ArtEnemble “The Art Ensemble of Chicago is alone in jazz history for reaching back conceptually to long before there ever was anything called jazz and moving toward a future beyond category.”
– Nat Hentoff
The Art Ensemble of Chicago and Associated Ensembles is a 21-CD limited and numbered edition issued as the standard-bearers of Great Black Music prepare to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Both The Art Ensemble of Chicago and ECM Records were founded in 1969, and there have been many shared experiences. As Roscoe Mitchell says, “It has been amazing to have taken this journey together.”
With their first ECM album, the widely-acclaimed Nice Guys, the Art Ensemble’s revolutionary…

…and polystylistic “ancient to the future” mix of musics – from the deeply spiritual to the fiercely experimental – was illuminated in new detail in Manfred Eicher’s panoramic production, and the stage set for many adventures to follow. These included the albums Full Force, Urban Bushmen, and The Third Decade with the classic AEC quintet line up of Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Lester Bowie, Malachi Favors Maghostut and Famoudou Don Moye.
All of Bowie’s and Mitchell’s subsequent ECM recordings are also gathered together here. Charismatic trumpeter Lester Bowie is heard here with his Brass Fantasy group, with Wadada Leo Smith and with Jack DeJohnette. Multi-reed master and primary AEC conceptualist Roscoe Mitchell appears with his Note Factory band, with the Transatlantic Art Ensemble co-founded with Evan Parker, and with an historic trios project recorded at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art. Along the way, numerous distinguished creative musicians make appearances – the long list includes Muhal Richard Abrams, Henry Threadgill, Craig Taborn, Vijay Iyer, Matthew Shipp, Tyshawn Sorey, Fontella Bass, Charlie Haden, Kenny Wheeler, Corey Wilkes, Gerald Cleaver, Phillip Wilson, George Lewis, William Parker, John Abercrombie, Eddie Gomez, and many others, in ECM recordings made between 1978 and 2015.

This beautifully-designed box set incorporates a 300-page book reprising all original album covers, liner notes and poetry (by Joseph Jarman), as well as quotes from Art Ensemble members and the press, new texts by Craig Taborn, Vijay Iyer and George Lewis, a preface by Manfred Eicher, and an introduction by Steve Lake. Plus: many photographs (some previously unpublished), archival documents, and more.

The Staple Singers – For What It’s Worth: The Complete Epic Recordings 1964-1968 (2018)

The Staple Singers…For nearly half a century, the sound of The Staple Singers was one of tremendous power. Roebuck ‘Pops’ Staples, daughters Cleotha, Mavis, and (sometimes) Yvonne, and son Pervis raised their voices in song to celebrate the Lord, but also to fight for civil rights and espouse messages of positivity and resilience to listeners worldwide. At Epic Records, the group transitioned from pure gospel and blues to soul and R&B – a move that would take them to the heights of commercial success at Stax Records. Cherry Red’s SoulMusic Records imprint collected the Staples’ six Epic albums on a 3-CD box set, For What It’s Worth: The Complete Epic Recordings 1964-1968.
The Chicago-based Staples came to Epic in 1964 following stints on labels including United,…

…Vee-Jay, and Riverside.  Their Vee-Jay release “Uncloudy Day” famously caught the attention of the young Robert Zimmerman, who as Bob Dylan would become one of the brightest stars in the firmament at Epic’s parent label Columbia.  Epic teamed the group with Nashville producer Billy Sherrill.  While Sherrill would become famous for his pioneering of the lush countrypolitan sound, he also spent his early years as a producer honing his craft with pop and R&B acts.  His first album, the Staples’ Epic debut Amen! (1965), continued in the gospel-folk vein in which they’d recorded at Riverside.  It featured rousing renditions of such familiar melodies as “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands,” “Mary, Don’t You Weep,” and the title song, which was popularized in the 1963 film Lilies of the Field and then turned into a hit recording by Curtis Mayfield’s Impressions.  The Staples revisited some of their Riverside material including “More Than a Hammer and Nail.”  Amen! is paired on the box set’s first disc, for timing reasons, with the group’s third Epic album, Pray On (1966).  It once again concentrated on traditional pieces including “The Lord’s Prayer” and “How Great Thou Art,” but also found room for Pervis’ recitation of Bob Dylan’s “John Brown.”  The Staples weren’t strangers to Dylan’s catalogue.  Not only had he befriended Mavis (and, the story goes, once proposed to her!) but they had recorded his songs including “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Masters of War,” and “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” at Riverside.

Freedom Highway, the Staples’ sophomore LP, opens CD 2.  In April 1965, The Staples were joined by drummer Al Duncan and bassist Phil Upchurch at Chicago’s New Nazareth Church to record the album. It recognized that year’s historic civil rights marches from Montgomery to Selma, Alabama.  The recording of Freedom Highway followed a tumultuous, important month in American civil rights history. Three landmark marches were held in March 1965 along the 54 miles connecting Selma, Alabama with the state capital of Montgomery. The March 7 march became known as “Bloody Sunday” when 600 marchers were violently confronted by state and local police forces. The March 9 event, led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., likewise reached a standoff between police and protesters. The climactic March 21 protest found the marchers protected by a staggering 2,000 U.S. Army troops, 1,900 Alabama National Guard members, and other law enforcement personnel. In the years since, the marchers’ route has been proclaimed the “Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights Trail” and deemed a U.S. National Historic Trail. The acclaimed, new motion picture Selma, which opens nationwide tomorrow, January 9, dramatizes these dramatic events which led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The Staple Singers took the opportunity afforded by their status on the Epic roster to record a service inspired by the actions of the marchers. The set preserved on Freedom Highway featured familiar civil rights anthems (“We Shall Overcome”), traditional gospel melodies (“When the Saint Go Marching In”) and religious pleas (“Precious Lord, Take My Hand,” “Help Me, Jesus”) along with the Staples’ newly-written “Freedom Highway.” Pops played his six-string guitar throughout the service – the same sound that made the passionate preacher an unlikely soul music star.  Sony’s Legacy Recordings expanded Freedom Highway to its complete form in 2015 with six additional tracks (and over 30 minutes of music).  Despite the “complete” subtitle of this box, only the original 11-track album is included here.  That seminal record is joined on the second disc by 1966’s Why, their fourth and final album to be produced by Billy Sherrill.  It was named after perhaps Pops Staples’ most famous composition, which charted for jazz great Cannonball Adderley and was also recorded by artists like The Sweet Inspirations and Brian Augur and The Trinity.  It was inspired by the plight of the Little Rock Nine, the black students who tried to integrate Little Rock’s Central High School in 1957.  Pops’ original songs and arrangements of traditional spirituals and folk songs such as “Will the Circle Be Unbroken?” (which they had first recorded at Vee-Jay) made for one of the singers’ most affecting and inspirational LPs.

The third disc has the two albums that most radically changed the sound of the Staple Singers.  Larry Williams (“Dizzy Miss Lizzy,” “She Said Yeah”) was tapped to produce the 1967 album For What It’s Worth.  Pops Staples’ penchant for protest and message songs found a vivid expression with the Stephen Stills-penned hit for Buffalo Springfield.  “For What It’s Worth” may have been written about the riots on the Sunset Strip (when police placed a curfew on the thoroughfare’s popular clubs and incited a response from the young people affected), but The Staple Singers tapped into its value as an anti-war anthem.  They were rewarded with a No. 66 Pop chart entry.  Williams ramped up their soulful, bluesy sound, even though the balance of the material was more traditional, including covers of Pete Seeger’s “If I Had a Hammer” and the gospel tune-turned-jazz-hit “Wade in the Water.”  The final album on the box, What the World Needs Now Is Love, represented a shift to pop-flavored R&B.  Helmed by Epic staff producer Ted Cooper, it featured not only the Burt Bacharach/Hal David title song but Ron Miller and Bryan Wells’ Motown hit for Stevie Wonder, “A Place in the Sun,” as well as the oft-covered “Let’s Get Together” (soon to be a hit for The Youngbloods), Curtis Mayfield’s anthem “People Get Ready,” and the Elvis Presley hit “Crying in the Chapel” as credited to lead singer Mavis with the group.  Dylan was once again present with a new recording of “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.”  SoulMusic has expanded this album with “Power of Love,” the non-LP B-side of “Let’s Get Together.”  Both sides were produced not by Cooper, but by R&B powerhouse Jerry Ragovoy.

What the World Needs Now Is Love closed out The Staple Singers’ tenure at Epic; they signed with Stax later in 1968 and began the next, phenomenally successful chapter of their career with songs like “I’ll Take You There” and “Respect Yourself.”  SoulMusic’s set, housed in a compact clamshell box, has a 16-page booklet with detailed liner notes by compiler Bob Fisher.  Simon Murphy has remastered all six albums.  For What It’s Worth: The Complete Epic Recordings 1964-1968 is a valuable document of a fascinating period in the career of one of America’s most beloved vocal groups.

full moon Full Moon: The Complete Collection limited 24 CD set containing All 23 of Judie’s studio and live albums plus an extra CD with a selection of tracks from the Moon on a Mirrorball compilation and the Song Clubs.
A gifted singer and songwriter whose fans include Elton John, Brian May of Queen, and celebrated violinist Nigel Kennedy, Judie Tzuke won an enthusiastic audience in the ’70s and ’80s for her passionate and personal fusion of pop and rock, and continued to record and perform well into the 2010s. She was born Judie Myers in London on April 3, 1956. Her Polish immigrant parents had changed their last names from Tzuke to Myers shortly after relocating to England (it was a common last name in their new home of Yorkshire)…

2.9 GB  320 ** FLAC

…but by the time Judie began her singing career, she had decided to use original family surname. Both of Tzuke’s parents were involved in music: her father, Sefton Myers, managed artists and singers (including Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice as the duo penned Jesus Christ Superstar), while her mother, Jean Silverside, acted in several popular films and TV shows. By her teenage years, Judie began penning poems and setting them to a guitar accompaniment, showcasing her original compositions at local folk clubs. Soon after, Tzuke met a songwriting collaborator in Mike Paxman, and the duo, known as Tzuke & Paxo, caught the attention of renowned producer Tony Visconti, who signed them to his Good Earth record label. The duo only managed to issue one obscure single, 1977’s “These Are the Laws” b/w “It’s Only Fantasies,” before Tzuke was signed as a solo artist to Elton John’s Rocket label.

Tzuke first issued a single for her new label, “For You,” which was a moderate success on U.K. radio, scraping the Top 40. But around the time of the release of her full-length debut in 1979, Welcome to the Cruise, Tzuke scored a more substantial hit with “Stay with Me Till Dawn,” which stayed on the British charts for 16 weeks and made several appearances on the popular TV program Top of the Pops. Despite landing a prime touring spot opening for her pal Elton John (including playing to an estimated 450,000 people at New York’s Central Park), John’s label switched distribution in the U.S. around this time, which made it difficult to find Tzuke’s music in record stores. Despite this, Tzuke’s career continued to prosper in England, resulting in such further popular releases as 1980’s Sportscar, 1981’s I Am the Phoenix, and 1982’s Shoot the Moon, in addition to appearances at major British music festivals and a pair of sold-out shows at the Hammersmith Odeon. Tzuke hoped that signing with a new label, Chrysalis Records, would bring her recording career to the next level, especially in the United States. This proved not to be the case, as Tzuke appeared to be lost in the shuffle when she issued her next studio release, Ritmo, in 1983.

Undeterred, Tzuke continued to issue further albums, including 1985’s The Cat Is Out (recorded entirely at her home studio), 1989’s Turning Stones, 1991’s Left Hand Talking, and 1996’s Wonderland (which featured a cameo by Brian May). Tzuke formed her own record label, Big Moon Records, shortly thereafter, which issued Under the Angels and the in-concert Over the Moon in 1997. Secret Agent followed in 1998, as well as another live set, Six Days Before the Flood, in 2000. Around the same time, Elton John decided to return the copyrights of Tzuke’s first three (and most popular) albums back to her, which resulted in them being remastered and reissued on Big Moon. Tzuke’s next studio effort, Queen Secret Keeper, was released in 2001, with an all-covers album, The Beauty of Hindsight, following in 2003. The 2004 album The End of the Beginning preceded her two-volume Songs series, archival releases with the first volume (2007) focusing on her softer material while the second (2008) favored rock. Two years later, her career-spanning Moon on a Mirrorball collection was supported by a tour of the U.K. After the release of One Tree Less in 2012, Tzuke offered her fans a subscription service through her website that provided access to one new song each month. Tzuke later released songs from the subscription series on the albums Song Club (2014) and Songclub Too (2015). The prolific Tzuke returned in November 2017 with the album Peace Has Broken Out, followed by a U.K. tour in 2018.

…from 1982 that was originally released on the collectable Link Records as “Live And Loud”.
The Adicts were an influential and idiosyncratic British punk outfit formed in the late ’70s in Ipswich, Suffolk by lead singer Monkey (Keith Warren), guitarist Pete Davidson, bassist Mel Ellis, and drummer Kid Dee (Michael Davison). Originally operating under the moniker Afterbirth & the Pinz, the quartet began performing as the Adicts in 1979, and quickly became known for their wry lyrics, ferocious yet upbeat sonic attack, and distinctive image — the band affected the look of the black boots and bowler cap-adorned “droogs” from the film A Clockwork Orange, and peppered their live shows with streamers, confetti, playing cards, beach balls, joker hats, toy instruments, bubbles, and glitter. They released their debut EP, Lunch with the Adicts, in 1979 via the Dining Out label, and in 1981 they issued their inaugural full-length, Songs of Praise, independently on their own Dwed Wecords — the LP was reissued the following year on Fallout Records, and included the single “Viva la Revolution,” which would become one of the group’s best-loved tracks.
They made the British charts with their second album, 1982’s Sound of Music, and in 1983 they hit it big with the single “Bad Boy,” which led to a record deal with Sire, who convinced the group to change its name to ADX — only two singles, “Tokyo” and a cover of Marlene Dietrich’s “Falling in Love Again,” were ever released under the moniker. “Tokyo” appeared on 1985’s Smart Alex, which arrived via Razor Records, and in 1986 the band issued its fourth studio long-player, Fifth Overture, before entering a period of inactivity. That hiatus was interrupted in 1992 with the release of Twenty-Seven on the Cleopatra label, who would go on to reissue the band’s first three outings the following year. The group remained relatively quiet until 2002 with the release of Rise and Shine via Captain Oi! Records. Rollercoaster dropped in 2004, and in 2008 the band re-recorded 1981’s Songs of Praise for Europe’s People Like You Records, who also put out 2009s Life Goes On. The band continued to label-hop, eventually arriving at DC-Jam Records for 2012’s All the Young Droogs and at Nuclear Blast for 2017’s And It Was So!

Eric Clapton – Transmission Impossible (2018)

TI Eric Clapton‘s musical output across a career spanning 55 years and counting, has been nothing short of extraordinary. But added to this, that the lion’s share of his work has been of a quite staggering quality, with more than occasional brilliance displayed, has made Clapton one of a handful of musicians, composers and performers from the rock age who patently deserve their place at the top table of the industry.
This 3  CD set celebrates and champions the contribution Eric has made to the pantheon of intelligent rock music as it contains three broadcast recordings of live shows from the 1960s, the 1970s and the 1990s. Kicking off with a superb concert the great man gave as part of Cream, the super-group which also of course featured…

Anthony Phillips – Private Parts & Pieces IX-XI (2018)

Between 1978 and 2012, founding Genesis guitarist Anthony Phillips released 11 volumes of Private Parts & Pieces. Each volume has collected various odds and ends from the composer/multi-instrumentalist which, for one reason or another, wouldn’t have fit comfortably on any of his proper solo albums. Since 2015, Cherry Red Group’s Esoteric Recordings imprint has been reissuing and expanding these fascinating releases in box set form. The third and final box (to date), Private Parts & Pieces IX-XI, collects the albums originally issued in 1996, 1999, and 2012 plus a bonus disc.
Private Parts & Pieces IX: Dragonfly Dreams (1996) took advantage of the long running time afforded by the CD format to bring together eighteen of Phillips’ compositions dating back…

…to 1986, including a 17+-minute epic piece for acoustic 12-string guitar, “Chinese Walls.”  The eclectic nature of the project also encompassed such tracks as “Something Blue,” a pop song once mooted for singer Elkie Brooks but reinterpreted here on classical guitar, “In the Valleys” from the recording period of his album Invisible Men (which itself was recently reissued by Esoteric), and a number of vivid improvisations.

While the artist played various guitars on Dragonfly, he turned to solo piano for Volume X, Soiree (1999).  Volume VI (Ivory Moon) was also a solo piano set.  The 20 tracks on Dragonfly were newly-written and recorded save for “Creation,” which was penned three decades earlier, in 1968.  Phillips announced that there were no overdubs on the album which embraced a soft, comforting tone on such tracks as the moving tribute to the late Princess Diana, “Fallen Flower,” and the opening musical portrait of a “Sad Ballerina.”

The final album in this box set, 2012’s Volume XI: City of Dreams, resulted from Phillips’ prolific work as a composer for television and library music on keyboard and synthesizer.  Some compositions weren’t felt by Phillips to fit into the library music genre (music written for the specific purpose of licensing for use in television, film, radio, or other media), so he collated those stray pieces to curate this 31-track Private Parts volume.  Some new recording also took place, including a guitar overdub on “King of the Mountains.”   City of Dreams remains Phillips’ final solo album to date.

The three volumes here are rounded out by a bonus disc, Private Parts & Extra Pieces III.  These eighteen previously unreleased tracks were recorded between 1991 and 2012, and comprise a varied lot of alternately shimmering and stirring instrumental material played on piano, guitar, and keyboard.  Three tracks feature guitarist Quique Berro Garcia, and a couple of alternate mixes of Dragonfly Dreams songs are also included.

Deben Bhattacharya – Paris to Calcutta: Men and Music on the Desert Road (2018)

Deben BhattacharyaIn many ways, musicologist Deben Bhattacharya stands as a direct predecessor to Sublime Frequencies, as one of the label’s producers, Robert Millis, notes in his introduction to Paris to Calcutta: Men and Music on the Desert Road. While Sublime Frequencies’ website states that its members are “dedicated to acquiring and exposing obscure sights and sounds from modern and traditional urban and rural frontiers”, Bhattacharya refers in the notes to his 1956 LP to “a living tradition of folk music” in every country he traversed, a string of political states from France to India, as the title implies. Fittingly enough, then, it is on Sublime Frequencies that the fieldwork of the late Bhattacharya returns to the forefront – not just in sound but in text. Four discs of…

585 MB  320 ** FLAC

…international field recordings accompany 160 pages of word and image, centered around a previously unpublished manuscript that sheds light on Bhattacharya’s personal experiences traveling and collecting. It makes for a fascinating examination of the ethnographer as an imperfect but ultimately irreplaceable tool of data collection. In his impressions of each place, Bhattacharya occasionally reveals biases and makes broad generalizations, but he also sets detailed, multisensory scenes, each one an immersive slice of his life. The observations are at least as fascinating now as they were when he wrote them in 1955, perhaps more so for the way they transport the reader through space and time. Black-and-white photos and more typewritten field notes add more visual and technical layers to the reading experience.

All of this is new to the extant body of Bhattacharya’s work; in an introduction by Deben’s widow Jharna Rose Bhattacharya, she describes her late husband’s “search for authenticity”. The movement to embrace the complexities of human involvement in ethnographic work instead of trying to present unencumbered facts is a relatively recent one, and Bhattacharya, like the Sublime Frequencies team, eschews embellishment in his recordings. It makes sense that he would also be cautious about adding more of himself to the narrative, but doing so is perfectly appropriate for this project, of which Bhattacharya is ultimately the true topic.

Placing Bhattacharya in the center of Paris to Calcutta in this way means that the music (an extensive collection of vernacular tunes that run the gamut from Bedouin coffee grinder rhythms to suites of Syrian classical music) is ultimately on the periphery, a soundtrack to set the atmosphere. Physically, the discs are set inside the covers, framing the text rather than inlaid within it, and that positioning holds on a less literal level. Brief notes on each track sit in the back of the manuscript, including track names, locations, instrumentation, and performers when known. Some, the book notes, have never before been released; all are brilliantly rough, raw works by performers often “as unused to being recorded as Deben was to recording”. It is this exact phenomenon, this sometimes shaky interaction between Bhattacharya and the participants in his project, that underscores why Bhattacharya’s reflections matter. As traveler, as researcher, Bhattacharya has always been a part of his own work, his experience or lack thereof shaping the incredible and diverse sounds that would eventually make up more than 40 hours of recordings.

Paris to Calcutta offers a wealth of words, pictures, and sounds. Taken separately, they excite the ear, marking moments in time that are preserved only in archival material as compiled in projects like this. Taken together, they are a complex and holistic portrait of a prolific and deeply influential musicologist. They illuminate the worldview and work not only of a researcher, but of a man, and in doing so, bring his unique journey to life.

In the sleeve-note to this collection it mentions John Lennon stating that Glam was “Rock & Roll with lipstick on”. Pretty near the mark, but it was also a number of other things, including a dry run for Punk and a near-revival of Bubblegum. Glam’s gender confusion whipped up a media storm…

460 MB  320 ** FLAC

…not unlike the Pistols with their appearance on the Today show a few years later in 1976. Without the nationwide reaction to Punk and the accompanying DIY ethos, it is possible Punk could have been seen as just a more political and slightly more outrageous version of Glam. All The Young Droogs highlights this, but really seeks to entertain by introducing some starry-eyed and platform-booted also-rans who just didn’t get the breaks, along with more successful acts who got the press but struggled for hits.

There was a ready made market for these bands that could have helped make them. The Skinhead rough kids, whose enthusiasm had waned for Reggae as the 70s wore on, were looking for something else to focus their tough-nut attentions on. Slade offered them easy access into the new, with their grafting some of Glam accoutrements onto the Skin garb of boots and braces and their rabblerousing Rock & Roll hitting the spot. Also there was a new set of young fans who had missed the 60s and wanted something of their own, something ultra-modern looking and sounding.

More than anything else they wanted something that had been tacitly promised them, by the spectre of the 60s, in films, on TV, something that was in short supply on the faceless estates and dowdy terrace housing where they lived or the grotty back street cafes, drab concert halls and old men’s pubs and clubs that they tried to eke out a nightlife in. Glamour. It was a perfect storm of attitude, dazzling colour and space-age technology, allied to a framework which looked back towards the dynamic flash of early Rock & Roll scene and Bubblegum’s basic but infuriatingly catchy simplicity. From there, garnished sometimes by primitive synths, Glam looked forward into a Sci-Fi future.

David Bowie and Marc Bolan, two ex-Mods written off as one hit wonders in the swinging decade, had been biding their time and launched a hostile takeover of the UK charts – you were either with them or you belonged in the past, that was clear. Glam resonated with these kids because it talked the same language as them, despite the otherworldly appearance and alien posturing; Cum On Feel The Noize, Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting, Ballroom Blitz, simple, savage and hugely infectious snapshots from the streets that these teens knew so well. Though looked on now as more of a UK phenomenon, Glam was popular in many other countries, with the US (where the form arguably emanated from), Australia, Sweden and even Iceland having their representatives present on this compilation…[louderthanwar]

Two Fisted TalesThis 3-CD version overseen by Tom Stevens contains the re-mastered album, a disc of demos from the band’s personal archives and a memorable live show from Palm Springs.
…The third – and so far last – Long Ryders album was originally released in 1987, the torturous tale of the process from demoing through recording and then mishandled releasing of which is told by Sid Griffin in the glossy booklet accompanying this sumptuous re-issue. You can read that in detail when you pick up this three disc box-set. Suffice to say that the final part of the story – the wholehearted getting behind the album by the record company – didn’t go exactly to any kind of plan the band might have had in mind.  Even to the extent – shockingly and unbelievably…

…– that the album cover (not the box art shown here) had only been meant as a mock-up prior to a proper photo-shoot.  Ironically, that put them in good – and appropriate – company: the Byrds never meant to release an album called ‘(Untitled),’ the record company just messed that up.

Any subsequent lack of sales is clearly not the fault of the album itself – it comes barrelling out of the gates with ‘Gunslinger Man,’ then careers straight into the Byrdsian ‘I Want You Bad‘ then pushes into ‘A Stitch In Time‘ which shows the Long Ryders mining a seam right alongside R.E.M. who were in the studio with ‘Life’s Rich Pageant‘ and ‘Document’ around the same time. Only it was the Long Ryders who came up with the dramatic mandolin lead history lesson of ‘Harriet Tubman’s Gonna Carry Me Home.’

Again, the second disc of this set is a collection of demos, from three different studio sessions, which not only documents the evolution of the songs on ‘Two Fisted Tales,’ but also proffers versions of songs that didn’t make the album such as the contemporary war story of ‘Flak Jacket,’  and the slow ballad ‘He Can Hear His Brother Calling’ with some nice guitar jangle below the small town tale of despair – it’s got a great Gene Clark feel to it. The final CD of the box set is a live show, this one from Oasis Water Park in Palm Springs. Naturally it predominantly features the new material but there were a few older tracks, such as ‘State Of Our Union,’ mixed in. Overall it’s good quality and well worthy of release. — AmericanaUK

The Long Ryders – State of Our Union: Live Sessions, Demos & Bonus Tracks (2019)

Long Ryders3-CD version overseen by Tom Stevens contains the re-mastered album, a set of demos from the band’s archive, and a legendary show from London’s Mean Fiddler. Re-mastered by Andy Pearce.
The Long Ryders’ second album, the one that opens with the powerful ‘Looking for Lewis and Clarke‘, has been given the deluxe 3-disc box set treatment for this reissue on Cherry Red Records. It hardly seems worth saying that the original album is one of the finest ever releases in the genre that didn’t yet know it was called Americana. This is the holy water sprung from the sacred source. With songs like ‘Capturing the Flag‘, ‘Good Times Tomorrow, Hard Times Today‘, the arse-kicking ‘WDIA‘ and the rock and roll boogieing title track it sounds as fine today as it did in 1985. No-one has…

…any excuse not to own at least one copy of this album. Disc 1 is the original album, filled out with the B-sides to the album’s singles – these were in the ‘Final Wild Songs‘ box in 2016, but not to include them again here would be peculiar.

So far so good – and Disc 2 doesn’t disappoint either. It’s a full set of the demos to the album, not in the album running order, not that that matters. Demos can, often, be rather dull filler – not here. ‘Years Long Ago‘ is a gaping wound of a song, and in the demo form there’s an additional layer of raw pain. ‘WDIA‘ is perhaps a tad slower than the final version – it’s longer for sure and without the sweetening of the horn overdubs it’s a more primal groove. Disc 3 fills out the box with the 8th December 1985 Mean Fiddler gig – there’s a blend of end of tour exuberance and in the encore there’s the heartfelt weariness of the sarcastic “yeah thanks” for all the critics as Sid Griffin reads out the reviews – all of them bad. — AmericanaUK

Curtis Mayfield2019 marks the fiftieth anniversary of Curtis Mayfield’s solo career. He had previously spent 14 years as a member and driving force of The Impressions. His unique voice and guitar stylings, not to mention his exemplary songwriting skills, helped bring the world such classics as “It’s All Right,” “Gypsy Woman,” and the iconic “People Get Ready.” When Mayfield split with The Impressions in 1969, he forged a new chapter in his career and in soul music. His unique blend of gospel-influenced R&B and socially charged lyrics paved the way for much of the soul music that was to come in the decades ahead.
Rhino Records reissued Mayfield’s acclaimed first four albums as Keep On Keeping On: Curtis Mayfield Studio Albums, 1970-1974.

rsz_gbh One of the key bands of the street punk scene that gave a second wind to the U.K. punk rock scene, G.B.H. (also known as Charged G.B.H.) were also one of the first bands to add a strong heavy metal influence to punk rock, and would be cited as an influence by Metallica and Rancid. Hailing from Birmingham, England, G.B.H. were formed in 1978 by lead singer Colin Abrahall, guitarist Colin “Jock” Blyth, bassist Sean McCarthy, and drummer Andrew “Wilf” Williams. The band’s name comes from the British legal term “Grievous Bodily Harm,” with which bassist McCarthy had been charged.

Stephan MathieuHighly influential, singular sound artist and engineer Stephan Mathieu offers another heart-stopping compendium in Folio, collecting 5 albums worth of music, plus lots of bonus material, following his massive ‘Radiance’ boxset released earlier in 2018.
A lesson in the art of craftng patient, deeply absorbing drone and string panoramas, Folio offers a fully zoomed out birds-eye view over reams of Mathieu’s more recent works (just shy of 8 hours in total), ranging from his haunting dedication to Ridley Scott’s original Alien crew in ‘Nostromo’ – arguably the last word in abandoned space station ambience – and thru to an expanded edition of ‘The Falling Rocket’ [2013], a rework of the droning dream sequences off…

…his 3CD set ‘Nachtstucke’, and a previously unpublished version of ‘Palimpsest’, the first Schwebung release, here retitled as ‘Folio’.

The ‘Nostromo’ disc is a big favourite for us, full of finely layered detail and subtle spatial dynamics in a way that perfectly evokes its subject matter. Likewise, we can say much the same for ‘Sacred Ground’, Mathieu’s soundtrack to a film of the same name, where again his skills as a scene dresser and dramaturgist come into play, whilst ‘The Falling Rocket’ finds him tilted skyward, with attention given to a vertiginous sense of scale and heady movement in the mid-higher registers.

Once again, the slow gaze is key to this amazing suite, offering some of the most restrained and absorbing drone and orchestral minimalism you’ll hear this side of Philip Jeck, Stars Of The Lid, Kassel Jaeger or Akira Rabelais.

Robin Trower – The Studio Albums 1973-1983 (2019)

RT Throughout his long and winding solo career, guitarist Robin Trower has had to endure countless comparisons to Jimi Hendrix due to his uncanny ability to channel Hendrix’s bluesy/psychedelic, Fender Strat-fueled playing style.
Born on March 9, 1945 in Catford, England, Trower spent the early ’60s playing guitar in various London-based outfits, the most successful being the R&B group the Paramounts, who specialized mostly in covers, but managed to issue several singles between 1963 and 1965. It wasn’t until 1967 that Trower received his big break, however, when he joined Procol Harum. The group had just scored a worldwide smash hit with “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” but the only problem was that the band’s leader, singer/pianist Gary Brooker…

…didn’t have a proper band to back him. Brooker was previously a bandmate of Trower’s in the Paramounts, and offered the guitar slot in his new fast-rising project to his old friend. As a result, Trower appeared on such Procol Harum classics as 1967’s Procol Harum, 1968’s Shine on Brightly, 1969’s A Salty Dog, 1970’s Home (which spawned the popular Trower tune “Whiskey Train”), and 1971’s Broken Barricades.
While Procol Harum helped launch Trower’s career, the guitarist realized there was limited space for his guitar work and eventually left for a solo career. Enlisting singer/bassist James Dewar and drummer Reg Isidore (who was soon replaced by Bill Lordan) as a backing band, Trower issued his solo debut, Twice Removed from Yesterday, in 1973. The album barely made a dent in the U.S. charts, but that would change soon enough with his next release, 1974’s Bridge of Sighs. With rock fans still reeling from Hendrix’s death a few years earlier, the album sounded eerily similar to the late guitarist’s work with the Jimi Hendrix Experience (especially his 1968 release, Electric Ladyland), and as a result, the album skyrocketed into the U.S. Top Ten, peaking at number seven.
Although Bridge of Sighs was to be his most popular solo release, Trower’s stock continued to rise throughout the mid-’70s, as he became an arena headliner on the strength of such hit albums as 1975’s For Earth Below, 1976’s Robin Trower Live!, and Long Misty Days, plus 1977’s In City Dreams. Further releases followed, yet by the dawn of the ’80s, it became quite obvious that Trower’s star was rapidly fading, as each album sold less than its predecessor. A brief union with ex-Cream bassist/vocalist Jack Bruce spawned a pair of releases, 1981’s B.L.T. and 1982’s Truce, before Trower returned to his solo career.
The ’80s saw Trower make efforts to expand his audience with several releases that attempted to update his blues-rock style (such as 1987’s slickly produced Passion), but none returned the guitarist back to the top of the charts. During the early ’90s, Trower returned to Procol Harum for a brief reunion (1991’s Prodigal Stranger), before backing ex-Roxy Music singer Bryan Ferry on a few releases (1993’s Taxi and 1994’s Mamouna, the latter of which featured a Trower co-producer credit). Trower continued to issue solo albums at the dawn of the 21st century (2000’s Go My Way), and a steady stream of live sets and compilations also appeared. Trower returned to work with Ferry once more on 2002’s Frantic (again earning a production credit). Reassembling most of his late-’80s band, Trower released Living Out of Time in 2004 and returned with Another Days Blues in late 2005. What Lies Beneath appeared in 2009 from V-12 Records. Over the next several years, Trower recorded steadily, issuing albums every few years: The Playful Heart appeared in 2010, followed by Roots and Branches in 2013, Something’s About to Change in 2015, and Where You Are Going To in 2016. Trower’s prolific run continued in 2017 with Time and Emotion which debuted at number two on Billboard’s blues chart.
